You can hide the markers under View from the main menu. I'm not in front of the computer so I'm not sure which menu function it is. I think it's under View though.
The tempo automation from the markers is stored on the Master Track. If you wanted to get rid of the markers entirely I believe you could select and copy the Master track tempo automation line, delete all of your markers, and then paste the tempo line back in. I don't believe you need markers to alter the Master Track tempo automation line - though they are a useful tool to do it and keep track of the time changes with. Again I'm not at a computer so I can't test it at the moment.
