Hi.
Personally I would adjust the channel's input gain with the volume slider left at 0db until the peaks of the meter read either -3bd or -6db across all the channels in use assuming you are not mixing samples, loops or recordings on the same track. The choice of how much to cut the volume by depends on the headroom needed for a given project. The more tracks supplying volume at the same time may increase the mixes overall output.
That should give you maximum volume slider adjustment during the mixing process.
If you have a recording or sample that is too low in volume to use the gain control effectively then adjust the volume of that recording / loop / sample in the sample itself and then adjust the gain control.
At least, that's how I would go about it.
If a project grows beyond your initial intentions then adjustments can always be made later.
